What Will Your Legacy Be?

What will you leave as your legacy to your family, friends, even clients? Consider these popular people and say the first thing that comes to your mind:

From golf to football to American Idol, these people will leave a legacy -- but will it be enough for eternity?  No amount of money or fame on this earth can compare to leaving the one legacy God counts as most important.  In 1 Corinthians 13:13, Paul speaks about it -- "And now abide faith, hope, love, these three; but the greatest of these is love." NKJV

I choose love -- it looks great on me!

Think about it?  When someone says your name do they automatically think of love or do they assume otherwise?  Are our responses to people and circumstances done in love or are they fueled with anger and hostility?  Do your children close their eyes at night remembering the fullness of the love you extended toward them that day or does the darkness of the night intensify fear and worthlessness they may feel from poorly chosen words or an unkind gesture?

As for me, I want to walk in love.  It will be my legacy and my children, my family, my friends, and everyone in between will know it because that is what I choose to walk in -- LOVE.  When we learn the love of God through intimacy with Him we become empowered to love others unconditionally.  Choose love as your legacy -- it is the only thing you will need in heaven.

"Love covers everything and makes room for anything." Barbara Ries

Here is a poem I just wrote which sums up my choice to love.

             My Legacy of Love

My time on earth will end one day,

Through friend and foe my hope I pray,

Not to be known for what I say,

But that by love I lived each day.  Barbara Ries 5/25/08

I hope you don't take any offense to this response, i know we don't know each other,. But i feel thinking about what your legacy will be is counterproductive and not in line with trying to live for the Glory of God. I say , everyday that the Lord gives you on this earth ,try, although it can be very difficult, to live it for His Glory . and your legacy to the only one who matters will be fine.

That is a beautiful poem.  I think God created us for a plan and a purpose and WE SHUOLD consider our legacy and be intentional about what we do each each day and how we do it.

Thank you Chuck.  We are created for His plan (Jeremiah 29:11) perhaps a plan greater than our eyes can see. Barbara :)

Barbara: I love your poem and think it is right on. We need to be God's hands, heart, and living word by the love we share and the way we live. People we interact with must know His love by ours. TFTP

Hello Barbara,

I was thinking about what you said while running errands today. I believe it was because your poem was so easy to remember, direct and to the point, that I found myself thinking about you while I was wondering what I could do for a brand new client with special needs. It resulted in me changing my plans to make someone else feel better, dragging an associate broker along who was glad to help out and never complained about the abrupt change in schedule affecting her personal life. I had no idea I was going to do what I did, do not know these people well, but your words were whispering between my thoughts and I realized things don't just happen, they happen for a reason.

Thank you for sharing your insights and God bless you for taking the time to write when you feel led. I know God has blessed me, because although I haven't read everything you've written, I did read what I needed to hear in a random, sort of recreational way... I was unaware it was significant and didn't know I needed it what you had to say until today.

Today I spent a lot of time with a lovely elderly couple who are really desperate to move back to Israel to be with their family. I did something I normally don't and wouldn't do. I "destroyed" family day when I left my kids with the hubby, cancelled my appointments (and plans to take the boys to the zoo) to run an extended open house for them from 12:30 -  5:45 PM. To cancel family day is not something we take lightly in my household. My husband works rotating tours and shifts, so it takes us 6 weeks to get a week end. When our week ends come, we plan our time carefully, because he will not be off again on a Sat and Sun until he rotates 6 more weeks into another week end.

I thought about the emotion in my client's voice and didn't even hesitate to whack my schedule. I just knew without knowing why that it had to be done. It was important to them to change brokerages and they were working under the advice of their lawyer. That bespoke the seriousness of the situation to me. I'm glad I didn't let it wait until Monday because I met a lot of nice and interesting people today, and the owners were very excited because for the first time since they recently listed their home "people actually came."

There was such a wealth of emotion behind those three little words when they said it, I wasn't sure if it was my imagination, but then they went on to explain how their home had been on and off the market for a very long time and they had never had an open house where so many people came. It was my first day representing them, my first Co-op listing, and when I got the call the afternoon before I remember telling them since I had some free time in the morning I would be happy to do the Open House the same day we signed the listing agreement. Might as well get started... I had no idea what I'd done. I don't think I will ever do that again, but I have to say my day with them was wonderful.

I keep wondering how those words popped out of my mouth for I don't know where that exact idea came from, I have never done that before. Now that I've had time to think, a moment of silence to gather my thoughts, I know it was that same, still, quiet little voice I heard whispering your poem that urged me to do so. "A God Moment." Who knew a 10:30 AM blurb to a Craigslist ad, a few flyers, three signs and a couple of balloons could result in making such wonderful new friends on a Sunday afternoon. It was easy to stay, didn't feel anything like an Open House, it felt like I was hanging out at my grandparents home visiting with the neighbors while chatting about decor. I gave out over 60 flyers and almost 100 business cards. The best part of it for me was getting a hug and a kiss and being told they knew I was "the one "they were meant to meet. They are convinced I was sent to them by God to sell their home because of what they had previously observed with my other client and how I was willing to put them first when I didn't have to, answering a prayer.

All of this goodwill from being inspired by a poem and praying grandparents... so, thank you again B.

Enjoyed your post. Love the poem. Bookmarked your page. Enjoy your evening. Regards, C.
